Most Pitch Decks Fail Because They’re Too Faithful to the Script

Writers love their scripts—and it shows. But here’s the thing: your deck isn’t a book report. It’s not a “here’s what happens” document. It’s a sales pitch, plain and simple.

You’re not just summarizing your story.
You’re selling it.
Big difference.

In my years building decks for studios, reps, and indie creators, I’ve seen one pattern over and over: great scripts buried in boring decks.

So before you hit send, run your pitch through this quick checklist. It could be the difference between silence and a second meeting.

The 10-Minute Pitch Deck Polish Checklist

  1. Are you pitching the experience, or just the plot?
Executives want to feel what watching your show will be like—not just hear what happens in episode one.

  2. Does the tone match the sale?
If your show is dark, the deck shouldn’t look like a TED Talk. If it’s fun, don’t use Helvetica and gray. Visual storytelling sells the vibe before they even read a word.

  3. Is your logline repeatable?
Can a stranger remember and repeat your logline after one read? If not, it’s not selling.

  4. Is your protagonist pitchable?
We should know who we’re buying. What makes your lead unforgettable? Why are they the heart of this story?

  5. Are you using visuals to seduce, not just decorate?
Great decks use imagery strategically—not stock photo filler. Every image should move the pitch forward or deepen the mood.

Real Talk

You’re not pitching a story.
You’re pitching a show someone wants to make and sell.

That means knowing what execs, reps, and buyers actually need: clarity, tone, confidence, and proof you can deliver.
